The Time Travellers

Small figures a big task

I invented little figures, my time travellers. They have no names and no faces. But whenever something shifts inside a picture, they appear.

They take time from places where it is wasted and carry it somewhere it can do some good.

Sometimes they walk through Berlin, sometimes they appear in space. They watch, intervene and disappear into the next picture.

I couldn't help it

I have been making art all my life. I think I was born that way. As a child I painted the walls until my father got upset. Later it was my shoes, my clothes and entire rooms. I always had to make them my own.

At some point I could not stop thinking about how often we live in the past or wait for the future. We barely notice the present. Maybe time itself is only an illusion, a bubble we sit inside without realising it.

I make my pictures from paper, acrylic, ink and things other people would throw away. Much of the tissue paper comes from my own shoe boxes. I tear it by hand and piece the fragments together into a new story.

Art in motion

Not every picture stays on the wall

My work does not end with paper and frames. I also paint some motifs onto fabric. Once someone wears them, the work leaves the exhibition space and moves through everyday life.

Wir sind am Leben

After an emergency operation nearly took me out of time, I wanted to thank a friend whose music had helped me.

That idea became two painted sweaters for the musical “Wir sind am Leben” at Theater des Westens.

A machine would be faster. But then it would no longer be one of a kind. Every sweater knitted, painted and signed by hand. Not an off-the-rack costume. A wearable picture.
